Son of former Birmingham MP Sir Anthony Beaumont-Dark sentenced for downloading child porn

Nicholas Beaumont-Dark given 12 months in prison, suspended for two years, after admitting making 393 indecent images of children as young as six months old

The son of a former Birmingham MP has been sentenced for downloading child pornography.

Nicholas Beaumont-Dark, son of the late Sir Anthony Beaumont-Dark, pleaded guilty in December to eight charges of making a total of 393 indecent images of children, by downloading them onto his computer.

The 50-year-old married dad-of-three, of Vicarage Hill, Tanworth-in-Arden, also admitted eight charges of distributing 388 such images through a file-sharing network called Gigatribe.

The judge in the case, Richard Griffith-Jones, sitting at the Warwickshire Justice Centre, sentenced Beaumont-Dark to 12 months imprisonment, suspended for two years, two years of supervision and £1,200 costs.

He was also ordered to register as a sex offender for ten years, was made the subject of a sexual offences prevention order for seven years and was ordered to attend a community sex offenders group work programme.

Passing sentence on Beaumont-Dark, the judge said: “You are fifty. You were, until you became enmeshed in this, a man of good character.

“You pleaded guilty at the first opportunity and you have had entrenched personal problems. None of that, however, diminishes your culpability in allowing yourself to join an internet club of perverts.

“They are infants, they have no one to protect them, they are completely vulnerable. You and others got sexual gratification from seeing it, which is frankly impossible for many of us to get our heads around at all.”

The court heard Beaumont-Dark downloaded images including horrific abuse of babies and young children. There were images of a six-month and 18-month-old baby girl being abused. Other children in the images were aged up to 13 years old.

Beaumont-Dark’s username was Daylight2007, the court was told, and the offences were committed between Jan 1, 2011 and January 25, 2012.

The court previously heard the offences involved Beaumont-Dark downloading 50 still images and 30 movies classed as being at level one, six still images and 57 movies at level two, four stills and 14 movies at level three, and 40 stills and 192 movies at the more serious level four.

The charges followed a police raid at Beaumont-Dark’s home in January 2012 and the seizing of his computer.

The Mail spoke to Beaumont-Dark at his gated home near Solihull last year, when he admitted the offences ahead of the crown court appearance.

Speaking through an intercom system, he said he deeply regretted his actions and had sought professional help.

Mr Beaumont-Dark’s father, Sir Anthony, died at the age of 73 in April 2006.

The former successful stockbroker was described by former Conservative leader Michael Howard as a “champion of local government” who was always ready to fight Birmingham’s corner.

In the 1980s, the MP tried to limit the import of Spanish cars, and threatened to resign his seat and fight a by-election over attempts to sell Land Rover to General Motors in 1986.

The following year he backed Austin Rover’s appeal for a cash injection of £400 million.
